Running the Activities for Yourself

The facilitator's role is that of monitor/observer and they will need to issue written and verbal briefs to monitor the exercise, enforce the rules, apply penalties and ensure safety where necessary.  An Observation Sheet is provided with each activity with key points to observe that will help provide feedback to the team during the de-brief after the activity.

A de-brief session with a facilitator immediately after the activity will consolidate the learning process by discussing what went well and what could be improved next time; some useful questioning hints and tips can be found here.

Upon arrival at the venue, you should report to Reception to collect your Teamscapes Activity Pack, which includes the following items;

  • Facilitator's Notes
  • Team Brief Documents
  • Facilitator Observation Sheet
  • Review Forms
  • Any activity-specific resources that are required

Facilitator's Checklist

  • Read through the Facilitator's Notes thoroughly to ensure that you are familiar with the exercise.
  • Where possible, visit the sites with the overview, tutor notes and team briefing.
  • Familiarise yourself with the layout and nature of the task. Note that some pieces of equipment can only be used in certain areas of some exercises.
  • Double-check that all the resources are in place. If anything is missing, contact reception who will be able to help.
  • Immediately prior to running the exercise - clarify times and rules, take a copy of the brief and your tutor notes

What you need to do

  • Lead the team to the activity.
  • State that no part of the site or any of the resources may be accessed before the exercise begins.
  • Identify any potential hazards and inform the team.
  • Give the team briefing sheet to the group.
  • Follow the guide in the Tutor Notes.
  • Stay on the site throughout the exercise and use the provided Observation Sheet.
  • Close the exercise in some form e.g. by calling out the time.
  • After the exercise, recover the brief(s) from the team and ask them not to divulge information to other participants who may be doing the exercise at a later date.
  • Replace resources and equipment in the start position and note and report any losses or breakages to reception as soon as possible.

Then return to your meeting room for any debriefing you need to do.
